Stationary Shop Success!

Hello Mommies and Daddies,

I hope that you are all enjoying the start of the summer. At English Now we are having lots of with our June/July Stationary riddles. The children are playing shopkeepers at stationary shops, listening to the teachers descriptions and guessing which item they want.

In preschool we have seen some of your children not only guess correctly by picking up the right item, but by saying the items name! This shows us how children will naturally listen and pick up key words when they are focused on playing, and produces great results!

Our afterschoolers have exceeded expectations too. In afterschool, after playing the Stationary Shop game, we play the “What do you have in your bag?” guessing game where the teacher describes an item and without seeing it the children guess what they’re describing. Even in the first week we had afterschoolers guessing correctly and listening intently to the item description. We have also been focusing on one stationary item and playing with it focusing on the keys words, such as “fold” for paper. The children have had lots of fun folding the paper into different shapes and have learnt lots of new vocabulary such as  fold in half and corner to corner.

By focusing on having fun playing games, and not “studying”, the children have subconsciously absorbed new vocabulary such as “sticky”, “clear” and “cut”. It has been wonderful to see the children so enthusiastic about playing these riddle games. We hope that in the following weeks in July they continue to have fun playing shopkeepers and can show you all at home what they are doing here.

Brush my teeth

Hello Mommies and Daddies,

We’ve now finished our April/May curriculum, but we just had to share with you how much fun everyone had doing the “Things we do at home” riddles! We had 3 main riddles: I wash my hands, I brush my teeth and I wash the dishes. For this riddle activity we used dramatic play to encourage the children to have fun doing the actions whilst listening to the riddle.

For the “I brush my teeth” riddle the children acted out the different stages from “I wet my toothbrush” to “Then I clean my toothbrush” with their own sinks, toothbrushes and toothpaste.

In preschool, we even continued the “I brush my teeth” riddle fun with two  special crafts. The children first made their own toothbrushes with popsicle sticks and paper, decorating them with their name and drawings. Our preschoolers then used their personalized toothbrushes for the riddle actions.

For our second preschool craft at the end of May we practiced making our teeth “nice and clean” by using real toothbrushes to brush a yellow tooth with toothpaste (white paint) until it  was white. This was lots of fun as the children practiced brushing up and down and side to side until they covered their whole tooth with paint.

By having fun doing the actions, we have seen the children subconsciously absorb new vocab such as scrub. We hope that your children will be able to show you all at home the fun actions that they’ve learnt.

We have lots more fun ready for our June/July riddles with Stationary shops and stationary play that we hope your children will enjoy just as much.

 

 

Food and Drink Learning Center

Hello Moms and Dads!

It’s almost the end of May now and we are very excited to share with you our Learning Center games. For the months of April and May, we have been playing learning games with food and drink. In our April Learning Center activities your children have learnt the concept of “halves”, basic addition and subtraction and how to classify items by color and size.

By just focusing on having simple fun in these games, the children have subconsciously picked up new English phrases such as “How many do you think?“, “I think…“, “I want to be the teacher“, “...plus…equals…“.

For May, we introduced a new activity Describe Fruits and Vegetables, which has introduced new English vocabulary based on shape and texture. The children were able to touch not only our texture board which introduced the textures “smooth“, “rough“, “mushy” and “bumpy“, but also the real fruits. The children are enjoying this interactive game and are debating with friends whether fruits are smooth or rough. It has been great to see the children subconsciously absorb the new vocabulary and use it to tell friends what texture they think the food is. We even had a special tasting week where the children were able to taste apples, bananas and lemons and decide for themselves if the fruits are sweet or sour. Some of the mommies have told us that their children are already using words such as “smooth” and “mushy” at home too!

It has been a joy to see the children enjoy themselves and their English thrive in our new Learning Center activities. We hope that the children will have even more fun with our June/July Learning Center activities!

 

 

Graduation!

こんにちわ!

日に日に暖かくなってきましたね。

桜の季節が終わってしまいましたがイングリッシュナウでは生徒さんの新しい幼稚園や小学校の話を聞き、頑張っている姿を見て私も頑張らなくちゃと気合を入れ直しています。

そんな日々の努力や成果を発表できるペアレンツデーのイベントが3月19日(土)に開催されましたので、その時の様子をご報告させていただきます。

午前中はマミー&ミーとプリスクール、午後はアフタースクールのグループでした。

午前中は沢山の生徒さん達と保護者様に参加いただきました。

Who Took The Cookies From The Cookie Jar? という本をテーマに、様々なアクティビティーを行いました。リズムに乗ってChants(チャンツ)を言ったり、こどもチームとお父さん・お母さんチームに分かれて交互にストーリーを読みあったり、卒業セレモニーに使用する帽子を作る時間もありました。

AfterschoolではPresentation timeという時間を設け、すでに練習を始めていたGradersで使っているテキストを読んで発表してくれました。まだAfterschoolに通っている妹さんがお姉ちゃんが家で聞いているストーリーを耳で覚えていて、元気よく一緒に読んでくれた時にはこども達の日々の家での努力が垣間見れた瞬間でした。

アフタースクールの卒業生も照れながらにっこり。

誇らしげな生徒さん達を見て嬉しい気持ちでいっぱいの一日でした。参加いただきました皆様ありがとうございました。

イングリッシュナウでは沢山の楽しいアクティビティがスタートしています。みんなで楽しみながらこれからも英語を学んでいきましょうね。

Shop keeper Riddles

2月3月のテーマ「Food and Drinks」ではたくさんの食べ物や飲み物を学んできました。

Riddlesの”Playing Shop Keeper(お買いもの屋さん)”は買い物に来た先生たちが言う食べ物の特徴を聞いてその食べ物を渡すというアクティビティ。例えば「I want something that is Long, Yellow and Mushy.」と聞いて、いくつかある果物の中からバナナを選んで渡します。

初めはもちろんすぐに分からなかった子どもたちもすぐに先生の言った物を当てれるようになり、何度か繰り返すうちにプリスクールでも「Yellow and Mushy!!」など特徴をしっかり覚えて言えるようになっていました!

アフタースクールでは早い段階で特徴を言うだけでどの食べ物かを即答していたり、2ヶ月の終わりには他のお友達が先生の役をしてくれた時もしっかり聞きとって答えていました。

 

プリスクールの午後のアクティビティでは単語を遊びを通してたくさん見る・聞く中で、ほとんどの子たちが単語だけ見て読めるようになっています。

 

この2つに共通して子どもたちは覚えようとしているわけではなく、遊びの中で自然に覚えているんだと言うことを改めて実感させられました。

 

この時期は毎年、沢山の出会いと別れがあり嬉しくも寂しくもありますが

4月からは新しく「Learning Center」という新しいアクティビティも始まりますので

子どもたちの成長を日々楽しみに新たな気持ちでスタートしたいと思います。
